Dear all,

It is our pleasure to draw your attention to the upcoming research talk of Prof. Stefan Haefliger from Bayes Business School (formerly Cass Business School). He will present an ongoing project titled “The impact of feedback from humans and machines on problem-solving in online communities”, co-authored with Sabine Brunswicker (Purdue University) and Ann Majchrzak (USC Marshall). ABSTRACT

Feedback from peers in the community has a significant effect on the productivity of individuals, yet machines increasingly offer feedback. We hypothesize that feedback from a machine and from a human have distinct individual effects and interact in affecting productivity in problem-solving. We examine data from an Open Source software development community, in which 1,219 developers produce 36,878 solutions to successfully solve 5,108 problems. We find human and machine feedback act in opposing directions taken separately: negative human feedback increases productivity, while negative feedback from a machine decreases productivity. Machine performance feedback, even if negative, tends to positively moderate the negative impact of human feedback: hence machine feedback is productivity enhancing.
